[users@httpd] Apache cannot start anymore

Hi all,

Yesterday our webserver was under attack and since than it cannot start
anymore. Iam sure the attack has ended, and the system is stable again.
Everytime I try to start apache with:
/etc/init.d/apache start
I get:
Starting web server: apache.
But after that when I try do a apachectl status
Looking up localhost
localhost
Making HTTP connection to localhost
Alert!: Unable to connect to remote host.

lynx: Can't access startfile http://localhost/server-status

I have already tried rebooting the machine, and I've tried reinstalling
apache, but none of this works.
Does anyone have any idea what more I can do???
