have you tried grepping for the quoted-printable version of that string?
e.g. s/=/=3D/g

They are there now.

Nope I didn' try that. so need to do a grep s/=/=3D/g *.mbox ?? Is that
right or did I screw it up? I'll check in a minute and see. No hits in
spam. No hits for that in ham. either. ::sigh::
