Yeah that's true.  But also, for those not filtering, when there's a jumble
of mixed emails, the subject is a handy cue.  On the other hand, for mail
list archives, with fixed width/height subject line limitations, this does
eat a few characters.  I suppose varying arguments could be made and
probably have been made for both sides, and I would guess that they came to
the conclusion to leave it in.
