Just copy the new fop.jar in the build directory of the FOP 0.93 zip file over the old one in lib. svn will report it as modified because it is different from the FOP 0.20.5 jar in the depot. Then, just apply the patch in derby-2373.diff and you should be able to build the PDFs.

Attaching a patch for this issue. To try it out requires also downloading FOP 0.93 and replacing the fop jars in lib with the jars from FOP 0.93 and then including all of them in your classpath before starting a pdf build.

I used FOP .93 to build the Reference Manual and the Developers Guide.
I checked the cover pages, headers, footers, tables, examples, graphics, and other
formatting and did not notice ANY difference in the PDF output using FOP .93
and our current FOP version.
I have not been able to get a build using the new toolkit and FOP .93 (but I was able with current
version of FOP). I think that this is a separate issue, so...
I see no reason why we can't upgrade to FOP .93

My apologies -- I linked from DERBY-2473 to this bug before seeing this latest comment. I can file bugs on the individual warnings, and if someone can explain how to fix the source to get rid of them, I can make those fixes.

Builds completed with current dita toolkit. I need to compare output with current PDF to see if there are any problems.
When I attempted to build using toolkit 1.3 (the one I am testing on with Derby-1992, I get an "images not found" error on this
line of the build.xml file... but the derby logo file is in the src/images directory, so I am not sure what the problem is...

Andrew - I'm going to download FOP .93 from Apache and test it with our current version of the toolkit.
After that, I'll test it with the new version of the toolkit.
Has Derby documented the changes to the toolkit/FOP that were implemented before?
It would be useful if this was done on an Apache Derby documentation Web page
so that the community has a summary of all of the changes made so that for future updates,
we can look to see if a new version of FOP or the toolkit changes anything that Derby has customized.

Andrew - The stat file shows the JAR files that were added, modified, and deleted. I have added and deleted the specified files, however,
I don't know how to edit a JAR file and it is not clear what needs to be "modified".

Most of the warnings seen with the new FOP build are identical to the warnings that we were seeing with the old FOP, but the new warnings are quite a bit more verbose. For example, the new error:

is the same as the old error:

Note that most of these warnings were present before the FOP upgrade. The problem with the tables in the pt_BR reference manual that were resolved as part of DERBY-2473 were a different, but related, problem.
As noted in DERBY-2473 and previously in the comments for this bug, most but not all of these warnings can be eliminated if someone has the time to fix them. In the case of the pt_BR reference manual, which produces more warnings than most of the other manuals combined, the <entry> elements inside tables need to be refactored to more closely conform to what the DITA toolkit expects for table entries.
Please close this bug if you find this to be a sufficient explanation for the new behavior of the FOP warning text. We can open new JIRA issues for cleaning up warnings in specific manuals.

Some of the errors may have occurred before FOP .93 (possibly the page and paragraph overflow messages).
Most of them appear to have nothing to do with what is in the actual DITA source, as far as I can tell. The only ones that I can decipher at all is the "Unresolved id reference" errors. These are always the result of an xref link to a table within the same DITA file. As far as I can tell, the xref is perfectly correct. For example, in the file src/devguide/cdevconcepts15366.dita, the xref

The effect of this warning is that in the PDF and monohtml, table xrefs don't work, although they work fine in the frames HTML.
With this one exception, however, the generated PDF and monohtml docs look just fine.
I suspect that many of the errors have to do with tables, since they refer to columns. But the attributes "column-number" and "number-columns-spanned" don't occur in DITA, so some intermediate step seems to have gone haywire.
Builds that incur errors take a lot longer, so this is affecting productivity. It would be great if we could figure out what is going on and fix it.
If I should file a new bug instead of reopening this one, please let me know.
