Problem with Open Office before and after installing new update
Hi. Matt Wiser here, and I have been a longtime user of OpenOffice since the Win98 days on a desktop, and now on my laptop. Today, I encountered a problem, and a forum search didn't help. I opened a document that I had created and saved two years ago, and it had wavy lines beneath all of the text, something that has never happened before. I downloaded and installed the update to the new version just released, and the same thing happens! Only by disabling the automatic spell check does the wavy line disappear. Language has been set to English (USA) as the default setting. What's going on here?
Thanks in advance for your assistance, and can someone tell me what's going on here? I am a casual user of my computer-probably with a Capital C, so, any help is appreciated.

I have made some thought on file security. I think that the backup strategy is not good at all.
I rather propose to copy the original to a temp folder. Then we work on the file and at save time we save first the temp file and then copy it back.
Before we copy back we check the health of the copy making sure it's in good state.
With this strategy we should always have a working copy available.
Haven't check the necessary changes yet.
It is just an idea.

I thought the backup proposed by Peter was for the registrymodification file. After second reading, it was about any file at all. Understood. Of course, that should be the standard process.
I think that the new file should be written as a temporary file next to the original one and the original deleted and the new one renamed after the system has confirmation from the OS that the save is complete.
I think that when saving a file in MS Office, we can see such temporary files appear and disappear when saving.

As far as I remember, even waiting for a long time doesn't change anything.
No real time to investigate when that file is open but will try to record if there is something special.

Hager,
My thoughts on a backup were that the file opened at start of an editing session should be backed up, so that in the event that the edited file corrupted (the ### problem) the previous version remained available. It is bad enough to lose a session of edits, but how much worse to lose the entire file as often occurs with the ### problem Having regard to the large size of current hard disks, I feel that this backup procedure (might it need to be a backup of a backup?) should be enabled by default

Perhaps such a file is at the limit of what OO can comfortably handle. I know from my own experience that large files can be slow to format correctly, depending where in the file the cursor was last positioned. The formatting seems to start at the cursor position and seems to take several passes through the file until it stabilises. The ### problem you report may be an instance of this and might have cleared with the stabilisation of the formatting.

There is a bug report for the ### and for the dictionary issue (but the latter was closed as fixed).
Never heard of a feature request to have a backup of the registrymodification.xcu file. Sounds a good idea but still needs tweaking from user to restore the former file.
As for the spellcheck corruption, I noticed quite recently that it could be in fact a temporary glitch. It happened on a big file (25MB), sometimes all the text is underlined and sometimes there is no underline at all (even where there should be). This behavior disappear after some time (haven't yet investigated what is needed, reboot or Windows session...).

There certainly ought be, but I cannot point to one.
I think Hagar has remarked on Forum of one instance of spellcheck or file corruption on his (work) Windows system, and with great respect, that might be due to a freak close down on his part. In this sort of fault finding the user reports of their actions are "unreliable", as they often feel they are being trapped into an admission of improper computer use.
In ten years of heavy use of StarOffice/OO (last years on linux) I have experienced file corruption or spellcheck problems on very few occasions, caused by unexpected power cuts in storms. My computer experience goes back to 1965 (Fortran II on an IBM 1640), so I am aware of the need for system in their use,

Thanks for the sum up.
Still I think we should find a solution.
So i adf backup at the start of editing session to the list.
Is there a bug for this?

The # issue seems caused usually by overhasty close down of the computer, after space has been allocated in the zip archive but before the data has been written to that space, which on inspection is usually 00 (zeroes).
The spellchecker problem seems highly user related. In almost all cases it is cured by deletion or renaming of the OO user profile. Why it sometimes occurs after installation or upgrade of OO I do not know - I would guess that this may be caused by "finger trouble" - the user using some non-standard method of installation.
Instances of faulty spellchecking on a previously good installation seem to arise from partial corruption of registrymodiifications.xcu, which may be attributed to over hasty close down of the computer before the software/hardware write buffers have flushed to disk (remember that modern hard disk drives also have internal data buffering).
Most of these instances of file corruption/faulty spellcheck occur on Windows.
Long time computer users, who honour the correct power off procedures, do not seem to have these problems.
A major requirement is that the original file should be backed up at the start of an editing session, so that in the event of a file corruption, only the current edit changes are lost.

So we have 3 ) critical bugs?
1) # issue
2) spell checker
3) I don't have in mind but Hagar mentioned it in his bugzilla thread.
:( I whish I could start immediately to find solution for them.

I myself have had the spell check problem under OSX and the solution given
by the users group resolved it. That is the only problem I have had with
AOO other than a few odd quirks that, to no surprise, others also
experienced. In my past I have worked with at least 5 different pieces of
writing and publishing software and found that they are all similar and
each has it's own set of quirks. As stated, there is no perfect software.

If you simply answer "no" to the option of keeping your profile when you
upgrade from 3.x to 4.x, you get a new and working profile without the
need to look for workarounds later.
So this can be "solved" by simply not upgrading 3.x profiles any longer
by default, starting with OpenOffice 4.2.0.

Andrea.

Why ever not? Freedom of choice is a *good* thing, not a bad one! And
what's that about "If this is a community"? You can make your own choice
to be part of a community or not.

Exactly what makes you think anyone is being self-important? You are
important enoiugh to make whatever changes you wish.

This community is very democratic, you're free to contribute to fix the
problem.
> I mean somebody there decides when to change the software.
That's truth and because we live in a free society he is free to
voluntarily contribute his time and energy to solve some issues.
> An the software changes for everybody ....Are this persons aware the problems they create touching the Openoffice..?
How do you come to the conclusion that the problems are related to
changes in the software.
The problem may have been present for a long time, but have just
manifested itself due to outside circumstances for example changes in
the Operating System.

Correct! And nobody should say if you don't fix it don't upgrade.

Nobody is more important than others, but some are easier to work with.
>

Correct and that's why we help them by giving clear instructions.
And just for your understanding OpenOffice is maintained by volunteers
who give their time and energy for free.
And because they are not more important and are willing to listen, they
will be happy if anyone could find the cause of the problem until now

At least I didn't had this problem, but I know many others had it.

There is no and never will be perfect software, but if the solution
works then at least you have a working application
upgraded to the latest version where many other issues are solved.

I begin the campaign : DO NOT UPGRADE the OPEN OFFICE UNLESS the SPELL CHECK IS GOING TO WORK .. I don know who decides when to upgrade it, but how many of us have a problem with the spell check after it.
The solution given, solution at end, made with respect, is Neanderthal Time !!!
I saw it the same answer before in this "chat"Spell check is an aptitude old as word editors. Do not touch it.

Start by renaming your OpenOffice user profile.
As you are using Windows close OpenOffice and the Quickstarter. Open File
Explorer. Copy and paste %appdata%\OpenOffice\4 in the File Explorer (sometimes called Windows Explorer)
Address Bar and press Enter. Rename the "user" folder - "user.old" is a
good choice. Start OpenOffice.
This cures most spellcheck problems.

As you are using Windows close OpenOffice and the Quickstarter. Open File
