[Torque] Building from source

As of CVS pull (3/20/02 - 11:46 CST)

ANT build.xml problems (1.37):
1) deps.list (1.5) has older version of statum than build.xml requires

CVS build issues:
1) org.apache.torque.manager.* was marked as deleted from the repository yet
Torque.java (1.50) still utilizes these classes.

Documentation issues:
1) I think it would be more appropriate in the [Torque Build] section on the
developer-guide to replace the simple link to a generic Maven page with a
short "here's how to build Torque with maven". Something simple and with steps
layed out for those not familiar with Maven.

Fixed. Thanks for pointing it out.

I just did a fresh checkout. Everything seems to be in order now and
Torque builds correctly. If you were doing a CVS update, did you forget
to specify the '-d' option?

That is the plan. Later today I'll try to update all of the turbine
project pages with links to Maven's "Getting Started" document which
describes how to install, integrate, and use Maven with the Turbine
projects. In the meantime, if you haven't found it already:

http://jakarta.apache.org/turbine/maven/getting-started.html

Thanks,

I think that's correct. Something like this:

import org.apache.fulcrum.Fulcrum;
import org.apache.fulcrum.intake.IntakeService;
...
return (IntakeService)Fulcrum
             .getInstance().getService(IntakeService.SERVICE_NAME);

My guess here is that the Fulcrum.properties file might
have different logging levels set. Or perhaps that there
is something about the path to the log file that's missing.

Here is a stack trace from turbine.log:

	Exception: org.apache.turbine.util.TurbineException: Instantiation failed

	Stack Trace follows:

I have created an intake like pull tool of my own, and from this pool tool,
I am calling the service I have created (which worked succesfully in t3).

At the moment in my code I am getting an instance of the service by:

return (IntakeService)TurbineServices
            .getInstance().getService(IntakeService.SERVICE_NAME);

Should I be using the fulcrum.Fulcrum class instead?

None of the services in my Fulcrum properties file appear in the services
initialisation section of the turbine.log.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

I haven't actually tried to use fulcrum services from T2 yet, but
I think the usual access through the services static facade methods
should work. Either that, or through the Fulcrum class's static
methods. I have several other things I need to get to first, but
I'll try to take a look this afternoon unless you figure it out
before I get to it.

Ok.

I know now (from debugging the ComponentLoader) that it is working perfectly
and loading the component.

So I must be doing something wrong.

I assumed that services within the fulcrum.properties file would just be
exposed as normal services, but clearly this is not correct.

How should I use fulcrum services within my code???? (in t-2.2)

ComponentLoader problem

Posted by Gareth Coltman <ga...@majorband.co.uk>.
Hi,

I am using t-2.2, and am trying to use some fulcrum based services I have
written. I am having a problem because the ComponentLoader which is meant to
load fulcrum services defined in the fulcrum properties file, won't load
anything.

When I try to use the service, the TurbineServiceBroker returns an "unknown
service" error.

The component loader also wont log because it requires a log4j appender, and
log4j is not used this way in t2.2.

I dont think it is even finding my Fulcrum.properties file. But without
logging this is difficult to determine.

The component loader is defined in my tr-props as:

	${webappRoot}/WEB-INF/conf/Fulcrum.properties

Has anybody managed to use a fulcrum style service with 2.2 sucessfully?
Please help!

A while back the $data argument of .render was removed. It should now
just be:

$renderer.render("navigations", "/DefaultTop.vm")

or similar.

RE: T3 app

Posted by "Gonzalo A. Diethelm" <go...@aditiva.com>.
Never mind the database files, I got them already.

I'm having the following problem with the newapp application.
When I visit /newapp/servlet/newapp, I'm seeing this on the
browser screen:

$renderer.render("navigations", $data, "/DefaultTop.vm")
$renderer.render("navigations", $data, "/Menu.vm")
$renderer.render("screens", $data, $template)
$renderer.render("navigations", $data, "/DefaultBottom.vm")

and I'm getting these errors on velocity.log (newlines added):

2002-03-21 12:12:14,506 -
  org.apache.velocity.runtime.exception.ReferenceException:
  reference : template = layouts/Default.vm [line 6,column 10] :
$page.Title is not a valid reference.
2002-03-21 12:12:14,516 -
  org.apache.velocity.runtime.exception.ReferenceException:
  reference : template = layouts/Default.vm [line 13,column 7] :
  $renderer.render("navigations", $data, "/DefaultTop.vm")
  is not a valid reference.
2002-03-21 12:12:14,516 -
  org.apache.velocity.runtime.exception.ReferenceException:
  reference : template = layouts/Default.vm [line 18,column 7] :
  $renderer.render("navigations", $data, "/Menu.vm")
  is not a valid reference.
2002-03-21 12:12:14,516 -
  org.apache.velocity.runtime.exception.ReferenceException:
  reference : template = layouts/Default.vm [line 21,column 7] :
  $renderer.render("screens", $data, $template)
  is not a valid reference.
2002-03-21 12:12:14,516 -
  org.apache.velocity.runtime.exception.ReferenceException:
  reference : template = layouts/Default.vm [line 26,column 7] :
  $renderer.render("navigations", $data, "/DefaultBottom.vm")
  is not a valid reference.

The same log file shows velocity is being properly initialized.
Any hints?

Thanks a lot, downloading right now.

You can take a deep breath now .... :-)

http://www.apache.org/~jvanzyl/t3-gonzo.tgz

I generated the sample app so you can see the generated files, but I
removed the jars from the WEB-INF/lib directory to save space.

Great, thanks Jason. I'll hold my breath now...

A minimal app is being generated by the 3.0 TDK. I'm in NYC but I will
try to build one and send it to you. I will also get nightlies working
with Maven. I'm here at the Zenplex offices and there's a quad xenon box
here that I can probably utilize. I'll let you know tonight.

T3 app

Posted by "Gonzalo A. Diethelm" <go...@aditiva.com>.
Whew, it's been a long time...

I want to try my hand at Turbine 3. I updated the following repos:

jakarta-turbine-3
jakarta-turbine-torque
jakarta-turbine-fulcrum

After enough update-jars, I was able to 'ant clean jar' everywhere.
Now I'm creating a simple Velocity form, and plan to add a pull tool
to see how everything fits together.

Question: how do I generate a simple set of property files (TR.props
and Fulcrum.props)? I only have the master files from the repo.

If the master files are intended for use with the TDK, can anybody
send my way a valid TR.props and Fulcrum.props (hopefully configured
for Velocity and mySQL, but I can figure it out if otherwise).

Thanks,

In the absence of that documentation you can
get a little more information with this:

'ant -f build-maven.xml -projecthelp'

And I have been very happy with this:

'ant -f build-maven.xml maven:update-jars maven:jar'

I should add that these commands work for all
of the turbine repositories, not just torque.

Maven is intended to make life easier when
building turbine stuff -- and because it is
pretty easy to use it seems to be catching on
for other jakarta projects as well. It might
be worth your time to look over the Maven
documentation.
