Apache behind firewall redux

Having placed my apache server behind an IPTABLES based firewall, all is
well, except for one thing: I am not able to get to my web server from the
LAN using www.domain.com, I need to use www.machine.domain.com. From outside
the LAN, people are able to use www.domain.com to access the site.

Is there a way that I can set up the system so that I am able use the
www.domain.com from within the LAN?

There's another (clearer :) possibility .. just uncheck in IExplorer
option 'Tools->Internet Options->Conneections->Lan Settings->Bypass proxy
server for local addresses' ...

Or register 'www.domain.com' on your primary DNS (maybe WINNT server in
your intranet ...)

I suspect you have a table entry allowing traffic *from* the external
network *to* www.domain.com

You need to duplicate this rule, changing *from* to reflect your LAN
