Resolution: Invalid
After spending some time to come up to speed on Python to attempt to validate what my Python team was telling me, I have come to the conclusion that my Python team was wrong. Our Python lead had a failure on his box, but it was due to a corrupted Python installation, and I had not been informed that no other members had ever attempted to validate. My sincere apologies for posting this issue, and I will personally validate any information from my Python team before posting it here again.

I attempted to duplicate this problem on a windows system I have access to, and it seemed to work fine. I was able to produce an egg using your modified setup.py and then I was able to install it with easy_install. Can we confirm that the stack trace is in fact related to the egg install?

Sorry for the delay - I was just told the error occurs on Windows 7 64-bit, which apparently worked fine using an earlier qpid dev build. The error is the one I posted, something about an unknown url for the amqp-0-10.dtd. I don't know enough Python to go much further myself. The Python team here won't be able to look at this in the very near future, so I wanted to pass this on. As to the question you raised - I'm now not sure if this in fact an egg issue, which is what I was originally told.

I'm slightly puzzled by what the stack trace has to do with eggs. Have you verified that this does not happen when you e.g. do an install from source? It would be useful to know if it's the egg environment specifically somehow causing the dtd lookup failure or if this is a more general problem.

local changes:
- edit the setup.py to make it build an egg
- make it so that the setup.py will work whether setuptools is installed or not (ie distutils only will work, but if setuptools is installed it will use that instead).
The egg created with this fails on Windows.
