DO NOT REPLY [Bug 52235] New: Please do a bit of SEO tuning for the
web site
https://issues.apache.org/bugzilla/show_bug.cgi?id=52235
Bug #: 52235
Summary: Please do a bit of SEO tuning for the web site
Product: Tomcat 7
Version: trunk
Platform: PC
OS/Version: Mac OS X 10.4
Status: NEW
Severity: normal
Priority: P2
Component: Documentation
AssignedTo: dev@tomcat.apache.org
ReportedBy: bimargulies@gmail.com
Classification: Unclassified
If I search Google for "tomcat StandardContext" I get the 5.5 doc at the top,
and none of the other versions. It would be good if newer versions also showed
up.

I've never seen this work immediately, it may take Google some time to resort
the results.
The Google Webmaster Tools site will allow an authorised user to monitor
sitemap processing.

The sitemap has been in place for a few days with no sign of improvement in
search results.

Two months on and still no change. I think we need to look at Rich's
suggestion.

XML sitemaps are just as effective and less invasive in my experience.
I will conjure something shortly.

sitemap-main.xml has 2 entries with the same loc:
<loc>http://tomcat.apache.org/</loc>
They do have different priorities.
Is that intentional?

I wish that I had a clue as to why google is so ignorant of the more recent
doc. I wonder whom we could rustle up who would know?

Nope. More of a wood/trees issue. Thanks.

Here's what I've done in the httpd 1.3 documentation:
<link rel="canonical" href="http://httpd.apache.org/docs/current/"/>
That appears at the top of each page in the 1.3 docs, pointing to the canonical
URL for that particular page. This has been extremely effective.

Do you want a patch from me for this, or is there a committer who is willing
and able to blow through it?
