hanging behavior while building assembly module

Just lately I have been experiencing a hanging behavior during a full
build of geronimo when building out on minotaur. I'm currently using
the latest publish_build.sh script to build I'm still seeing this
behavior. Below is the last output I see from maven:

    [echo] Bootstrapping service deployer
    [mkdir] Created dir:
/x1/home/bsnyder/geronimo_nightly_builds/geronimo/modules/assembly/target/geronimo-1.0-SNAPSHOT/bin
    [mkdir] Created dir:
/x1/home/bsnyder/geronimo_nightly_builds/geronimo/modules/assembly/target/geronimo-1.0-SNAPSHOT/config-store
    [echo] Building server.jar
    [java] 20:53:14,990 INFO [ConfigurationManagerImpl] Loaded
Configuration geronimo.config:name="org/apache/geronimo/J2EEDeployer"
[java] 20:53:16,172 INFO [Configuration] Started configuration
org/apache/geronimo/J2EEDeployer
[java] 20:53:16,760 INFO [SecurityServiceImpl] JACC factory registered
    [java] 20:53:17,934 INFO [LocalConfigStore:config-store/]
Installed configuration org/apache/geronimo/System in location 3
    [java] Packaged configuration org/apache/geronimo/System to
/x1/home/bsnyder/geronimo_nightly_builds/geronimo/modules/assembly/target/geronimo-1.0-SNAPSHOT/bin/server.jar
[java] 20:53:17,961 INFO [Configuration] Stopping configuration
org/apache/geronimo/J2EEDeployer
[java] 20:53:18,277 INFO [Configuration] Stopping configuration
org/apache/geronimo/DeployerSystem
[java] 20:53:18,298 INFO [Kernel] Starting kernel shutdown
[java] 20:53:18,300 INFO [Kernel] Kernel shutdown complete
    [echo] Building server configuration

Upon reaching this point, the build just hangs. I've let it go for
more than an hour just to see if it ever continues on its way, but
alas. The interesting thing is that I can get it to this on a fairly
consistent basisi this week. Just anyone have any idea why this would
be occurring?

I haven't seen that recently

I can think of 2 possiblities:
1. slow or overloaded machine. I get into trouble sometimes when IDEA
decides to refresh while geronimo starts. Try setting the timeout
higher with this in waitforstarted:
             maxTries="120"

2. some other instance of geronimo running without
o/a/g/RuntimeDeployer started.

Thanks for that tip, David. Now on to the next issue.

The lastest error during the assemble goal is as follows:

09:55:14,809 INFO [Credential] Checking Resource aliases

BUILD FAILED
File...... /home/bsnyder/.maven/cache/maven-multiproject-plugin-1.3.1/plugin.jelly
Element... maven:reactor
Line...... 217
Column.... 9
Unable to obtain goal [default] --
/x1/home/bsnyder/geronimo_nightly_builds/geronimo/modules/assembly/maven.xml:306:63:
<deploy:waitForStarted> Could not connect

Again, this error is very consistent and I cannot determine the cause.
Any help is appreciated.

usually this means there is another geronimo server already running.
To prevent this you can use -Dgeronimo.assemble.offline=true

but it will take longer and not check that the runtime deployer works
