[users@httpd] Can't find localhost

I have installed Apache and PHP on my local machine (Win98 SE) to test my PHP sites. I set the server and domain to localhost when installing and if I look at the httpd.conf file the server address is localhost.

When I start Apache, I have a DOS box with Apache/1.3.27 (Win32) PHP/4.2.3 running... but if I try to view http://localhost in my browser I get a "can't find page error".

Can anyone help a complete newbie.

My access log is blank and my error log only contains the following:
Apache server shutdown initiated... (several times)

Using IE6 I get a message The page cannot be found Http400 Bad request. I
get the following error from both Netscape 7 and Opera:
Browser Error

Your Browser sent a malformed request. You may need to configure your
browser to use proxies, or you may need to change the port that your
webserver is using.

Please send messages to the list in plain text only.

Check in your Apache server log files (access and error), and see if Apache
is actually seeing anything, and if there's an error message it might
indicate the problem.

Can you be more specific about the browser error message? State which
browser/version you're using, and copy the exact message. Without knowing
more it would be a wild guess about what your httpd.conf file looks like and
what your folders look like. My wild guess is your Directory directives
aren't set up properly (not referring to the right location, the Options
aren't correct, file permissions are not correct, or there is no file to
view).
