Let's just say that I have system called "bottemless" at work with
1.5TB of diskspace and lots and lots of RAM and I have *never* seen
that thing higher than 250 concurrent instances of httpd...
Even though I compiled Apache setting the internal limit to 512...
Maybe someone at HotBot (who uses SUN E10k and E15k) can chime in here?

:)
What OpSys? Obviously the math is a rough guess leaning toward
pessimistic; your system listed below is handling shared memory
and the per-process httpd isn't leaking.
My Debian Sparc64 is handling Shared memory correctly as well and
the processes are not leaking, hell they are only 2MB each anyhow :)
However, my E10k at work is badly bloated and not sharing memory
well (not at all in fact.) So that system needs 6GB of RAM just to
handle a 125 per user httpd spike (it's a Bbd courseware server)
and I had to limit the MaxPerChild to 10,000.
As I said in my past posts - the amount of memory needed on a per
system basis will vary a great deal...
Cheers!

i.c.
one of my server is set to 256 concurrent users and the total ram of all httpd is %MEM= 0.2 (according to top) , the total memory of that box is 1GB
256 httpd x 20MB each = 5.12GB is the required RAM of my box?......

Well, if concurrent users is 125 and the Total RAM of all httpd is
50MB ... well, you get the idea...
125 httpd x 50MB each = 6.250GB required...
(Some systems do not share memory properly...)

There is no directive pertaining to concurrent users AFAIK. ?? Do you mean
MaxClients?

Probably true. I don't know.
Bottom line is that you have this to work with:
amount of physical RAM
process size
shared memory size
some apache directives

You can use ps or top to see how much RAM is being
used by your httpd processes. You also need to subtract
the amount of shared memory to get a more accurate
idea of memory usage.
Don't know what concurrent users will tell you other
than concurrent users...

Did you compile Apache to do more than the internal limit of 250 ?
If so, then try this basic formula -
Amount of RAM per httpd times the number of httpd equals the amount
of RAM for concurrent connections.
CPU usage is more based upon how much swapping you do versus how
much Network I/O you do...

hello apache users,
i have this question, if I increase the hard server limit from 256 to let say 512.......what will be the effect of this change to the overall performance of the linux box where apache is installed.......in terms of memory usage and cpu utilization?...
another thing.....is there a chart or a website that will show the limitations of apache..
thanks....

I got it! both User and Group need to specify with a valid user or group!
Thanks!

You should check the archives. This has come up recently. :)
Make sure that the Group directive in the httpd.conf is a
valid group on your system.
