[jira] Created: (DIRSTUDIO-498) Save search to disk

Save search to disk
-------------------

                 Key: DIRSTUDIO-498
                 URL: https://issues.apache.org/jira/browse/DIRSTUDIO-498
             Project: Directory Studio
          Issue Type: Wish
    Affects Versions: 1.5.0
            Reporter: David H

Now that Directory Studio in 1.5.0 is able to copy searches between connections..
..why not make an option to save LDAP-searches to disk?

It would save a lot of time for people working with LDAP catalogs and where they would like to use the exact same searches on lot of clients.

Minimum wish:
A right click on search and "save/export search"
A right click on search folder and "load/import search"

Medium wish:
A right click with CTRL that saves multiple searches
A right click on search folders that imports multiple searches

Premium wish:
Associate extension on files with a LDAP searches so that they are added automaticly to the right server if that server exists

I hope this has not been wished for before... but this feature is the ONLY stopper for my bank to start using Directory Studio
(they do a lot of LDAP-work on their catalog (over 20000 objects) where they directly want to edit objects found after a search)

I don't get it, Torsten,

when you reopen Studio, then your connection, you'll get back the previously defined searches, no ?

Unless you are creating a new connection and you want to apply an existing search on it ?

Good idea. However I don't understand your "medium wish", could you elaborate please?

Another option would be to copy/paste searches as LDAP URLs. Such a URL looks like
  ldap://host:port/base?attributes?scope?filter?extensions
where options like alias handling and controls are put as extension to the URL. This makes it easy to share a search with other people.
This feature already exists for connections, see DIRSTUDIO-356.

Clarification on Medium wish
Today you can right click and get the option "Delete Search"
If you hold CTRL down when choosing more than one search, then deletions gives the option "Delete Searches"

In my Medium wish I would like to be able to mark more than one search with CTRL down when choosing more than one search, and the save/export options will change to: "Save/Export Searches"

Thats on the GUI-part

But for the file itself you need to find a way of allowing more than one search being saved.
How that is done I leave to the developers, but as an old programmer I know this is to ask more than just a simple saved search as in my Minimum wish, and that is why I classified it as "medium".

And to clarify the Premium wish: It really applies to both minimum and medium wishes. I just tried to picture the work needed, and going into other modules (like extension handling in installers and everything) will take more time from developers.

The first "minimum wish" is really something that would be really really great feature if it could be done easily.
I would gladly put in a lower priority Wish for the premium wish in later versions even if that also is a cool feature :)

I too have a two or three searches that I need on a regular basis and setting them up from scratch every day is very annoying. It would be perfect if they were available without manually loading a file, but I'm not sure what the best solution would be UI-wise.

Disregard what I said, stupid me hid the Searches "tree" when I started using DS and made a habit of using *Quick* Searches... sorry for the noise.
