[jira] Created: (COUCHDB-69) Allow selective retaining of older revisions to a document

Allow selective retaining of older revisions to a document
----------------------------------------------------------

                 Key: COUCHDB-69
                 URL: https://issues.apache.org/jira/browse/COUCHDB-69
             Project: CouchDB
          Issue Type: Improvement
          Components: Database Core
         Environment: All
            Reporter: Jan Lehnardt
            Priority: Minor

At the moment, compaction gets rid of all old revisions of a document. Also, replication also deals with the latest revision. It would be nice if it would be possible to specify a list of revisions to keep around that do not get compacted away and replicated.

As a note to anyone viewing this issue, please read:

http://wiki.apache.org/couchdb/DocumentRevisions

At the moment, document revisions are internal-use-only and are not designed for applications to make direct use of. To implement a fix for this issue the revision system would need to be redesigned to provide revisions intended for client use and manipulation.

An extension of this that might prove useful would be to have the ability to disable compaction completely for a given database. Using revisions for versioning could prove useful, but the fear that compaction is triggered accidentally might prevent its widespread use.
