work directory persitence?

Well, I asked this same question a hundred plus messages back. Here it is again:

In tomcat 3.0, there is an option to turn the persitence of the work dir on and off (true or false). However, this option seems not there in later versions(3.1 & 3.2). I wonder if I am correct? If so, what was the reason?
