[Bug 121653] New: Crash when i export certain file under W8

https://issues.apache.org/ooo/show_bug.cgi?id=121653

            Bug ID: 121653
        Issue Type: DEFECT
Summary: Crash when i export certain file under W8
    Classification: Application
           Product: word processor
           Version: AOO 3.4.1
          Hardware: PC
                OS: Windows 8
            Status: UNCONFIRMED
          Severity: normal
          Priority: P3
         Component: save-export
          Assignee: issues@openoffice.apache.org
          Reporter: lossless2aac@gmail.com
                CC: issues@openoffice.apache.org

Hi friends, my problem is that i get a crash in AOO when i try to export
certain file. I've tried the same file in last version of LibreOffice and crash
too, but only hapens under W8 (in both). I've tried under XP and all works fine
(tried at least two times and only with AOO).

I was able to export two or three times, but mostly fails.

I can attach the file, because is big, and copyright protected (is an ebook).

Thanks in advance.

That is odd. Could you attach a document that crashes just with that
character?

Thanks!

mmm thats true. I've tried on my other PC and works fine, even the font is like
you said (the pdf don't have the symbol font but don't crash). I don't know
where's the problem, because the only difference between both PC's is the
hardware, M$ Office and Photoshop.

Maybe the problem is that i don't have M$ Office on PC where fails.

I'll do some tests.

OK. It sounds like you've found a workaround for your configuration, but I
still want to see if we can track down the original crash. Obviously we want
OpenOffice to not crash, even on machines that are missing a font.

Question: The file you attached, the one with just the one symbol in it, was
this crash for you before you installed MS Office? Or was that file just an
example to show the symbol?

If that file was crashing for you I can try on a clean Windows machine without
Office and see if I can reproduce the crash.

Hi again, finally works. I've installed M$ Office and works like is expected.
I think that the problem was system fonts, and M$ Office 2013 reinstall that
fonts. Maybe Windows 8 fonts have some problem.

Thanks for all help :)

I installed 3.3.0, 3.4.0 and 3.4.1 on fresh virtual machines with Windows XP.
No MS Office installed. No crash in any of those configurations.

I wonder if Windows 8 is an essential part of this?

I created a new Word 2010 document (.doxc) with the characters "Symbol" of
Mictosoft.
Open this document (.doxc) with AOO400
Save as ODF type and closed it.
Open this new .odt >
File > Export as PDF... >
PDF/A-1a or Create PDF form Submit format FDF
with or not "Embed standard fonts"

No crash.

Hi again,

The simple symbol of the file i've attached make it crash... but just before
install M$O. After i've installed M$O just work again.

If you need help with anything, i can install a Virtual PC with a clean windows
and do some tests ;)

Crash Symbol

Maybe the problem is because i think that the real font was a "Symbol" font.
Then i press ctrl+m and then the program changed the font to "Times New Roman".

I've copied that symbol to new document maintain the symbol font and crash too.

Thanks :)

I'm not seeing the crash, with AOO 3.4.1 and Windows 7.

I loaded document. The character shows up as a black block. (Presumably Times
New Roman does not have that character). I then do File/Export, taking the
defaults. No crash.

I tried again, changing the font to Symbol so the character shows up. No crash
that way either.

Are you overriding any of the default PDF export settings?

--- Comment #3 from Rob Weir <ro...@apache.org> ---
So you have a set of copy & paste operations, some reformatting and then the
export to PDF, where the crash occurs.

Could to try one quick test more?

What if you do all the copy & paste and formatting, but then save to an ODT
file (or DOC if that is what you were using). Then exit OpenOffice, restart
it, load the document and export to PDF.

That will tell us whether the issue is in the PDF export, or whether the
earlier steps are the problem. If it still crashes, even when you restart in
the middle, you can send your document to me: robweir AT apache.org

Thanks!

Export to what? PDF?

Also, is there any commonality among the files that crash when exporting? Are
they are very large?

Thanks for reply. Yes, i forgot to say to PDF, sorry.

The file have about 340 pages, and is copied from a doc file to an odt (ctrl+c,
ctrl+v), then i've reformated the file using styles and i've deleted the old
.doc format with ctrl+m. The file is of 3MB (1.6MB of Template), and the first
page have a background image.
The doc don't have any strange symbols like other bug report that i've seen,
but fails too.

I forgot to say that my OS is Windows 8 x64, and like i said above works fine
in a PC with Windows XP SP3 x86. I've to try in another PC that i've with
Windows 8 x86, but whenever i can.

I can send the file in private message or something, but not in this post
(copyright).

Thanks for this big program, and for your help :)

Hi again :)

The document is fully saved to odt (to store) and crash in PDF export, at about
50%/60% of process.

I've tried to copy the whole text to another file and crash too.

A video is better than words ;)

http://youtu.be/cSuZiUI7HW8

Finally i did some test and i've found the exact page when the program crash,
and i think that is this character:

I've copied that character to new document and it crashed too, and i don't know
why because the character is from a Times New Roman font, like the most of the
document.

For now i've deleted the character and the program works well. Why crash with
that character?

Thanks for all help ;)
