Tomcat timeouts not happening with SSL connections to apache

Hi,
We have an application using apache and tomcat. We use a timeout on Tomcat
to clean up user sessions.
This works OK communicating to apache using http, but when we built the
system using a connection
over https, the timeout stopped happening. Does anyone have any idea why
this is?
