[jira] [Created] (MAHOUT-1112) Migrate code from Lucene / Solr 3.6
to 4.0.0
Andrew Janowczyk created MAHOUT-1112:
----------------------------------------
Summary: Migrate code from Lucene / Solr 3.6 to 4.0.0
Key: MAHOUT-1112
URL: https://issues.apache.org/jira/browse/MAHOUT-1112
Project: Mahout
Issue Type: Task
Affects Versions: 0.8
Reporter: Andrew Janowczyk
Fix For: 0.8
Attachments: mahout-lucene-3.6-to-4.0.0-patch
Lucene/Solr 4.0.0 was released on October 12, 2012
Many of the functionalities have changed, so it wasn't an easy migration.
I'm including a patch, which passes all junit tests, for review.

Andrew Janowczyk commented on MAHOUT-1112:
------------------------------------------
i hear ya, i believe i only used it in ClusterLabels, though i'd be very open to suggestions : )
i found that the problem was that the function isDeleted was removed, making iteration over all documents a difficult since you don't know if it is or isn't there.
the AtomicReader assures a snapshot view of the repository at reader creation time, so that problem is circumvented.
i didn't really see any special note in the migration text about how to deal with this issue, but looking back i think i have a few ideas.
if its a problem, create me a ticket and i'll implement my ideas there in a patch while you review this one. for the time being i think it should be okay to at least get things rolling.
fyi the approach i'm thinking may also work is:
{code}
Bits liveDocs = MultiFields.getLiveDocs(indexReader);
if (liveDocs.get(docID)) {
// document is not deleted...
}
{code}
but haven't had time to test it

Grant Ingersoll commented on MAHOUT-1112:
-----------------------------------------
Starting to review, seems like we could put together a few utility classes to reduce the amount of repeated code (which was in there before), i.e.:
{code}
if (analyzerName.equals(StandardAnalyzer.class.getName())) {
Class<?>[] params = new Class<?>[1];
params[0] = Version.class;
Object[] args = new Object[1];
args[0] = Version.LUCENE_40;
analyzer = ClassUtils.instantiateAs(context.getConfiguration().get(DocumentProcessor.ANALYZER_CLASS,
StandardAnalyzer.class.getName()),
Analyzer.class, params, args);
} else {
analyzer = ClassUtils.instantiateAs(analyzerName, Analyzer.class);
}
{code}
I see code like that in a few places. Maybe an AnalyzerUtils?
I'll try to get to it next week, but if you want to go for it Andrew, that would be great.
We also seem to have some inconsistent usage around creating analyzers. In some cases, we check if it is StdAnalyzer, in other places we don't.
Also, a quick scan of most analyzers in 4 indicate they take in Version, etc. We probably should figure out some better way to instantiate Analyzers.

First glance this looks good. I noticed the SlowComposite reader stuff in there. We probably should find a way to not have to use that, but for now it is probably fine (plus I need to brush up on those things, too)

That is very peculiar.
That posting is talking about the solution being to *remove* the dependency. You have added the dependency. Very odd.

Attachment: ClusterLabels.java.patch
As per my comment above, find attached a version of ClusterLabel which doesn't use an AtomicReader or SlowCompositeReader.
There is also a resolved bug that minNumIds/maxLabels was always overridden with the default value even if given at command line.

thinking about it a bit more i wonder, has mahout considered matching its release versions with lucene like solr has recently? thus mahout 4.0 will work with solr/lucene 4.0, obviating the need for a compatibility matrix?

Andrew Janowczyk updated MAHOUT-1112:
-------------------------------------
Attachment: mahout-lucene-3.6-to-4.0.0-v2.patch
Submitting a patch (v2) with all the previous ones rolled into one, plus corrected a bug in LuceneIterator.
Also removed the javaee-api dependency. seems that my repo was a bit corrupt, removing it removed the need for the dependency.

Ted Dunning commented on MAHOUT-1112:
-------------------------------------
What is the point of the javaee-api dependency? I don't see any code in mahout-lucene-3.6-to-4.0.0-patch
