Subversion on Debian

Excuse me but there is some planning about update Subversion on
Linux/Debian?
The last release avalaible for this platform is 0.33.0-1, that is 3 versions
later.

Thanks.

Fabio

Hmm, that's probably because it is by far the most preferred version. But
the actual requirement is 4.0.14, 4.1.25 (if there's no 4.0.14 for your system)
or 4.2.52. The actual order of preference is:

- 4.2.52
- 4.0.14
- 4.1.25

Since 4.2.52 has automatic log file removal built in, it takes away a
crucial admin task. It also seems very stable. That's why it is preferred over the
other two versions.

bye,

Erik.

The INSTALL file is quide explicit about it: "BUILD REQUIREMENTS" ...
"You'll need Berkeley DB 4.2.52 installed on your system."

I'm not saying that you are wrong, but the current version of the
documentation certainly discourages building with previous versions.

I think that they are delaying the upgrade to handle just one
dump/reload, instead of two (remember, there was an fs change after
0.33). Once libapr (actually apache2) has been recompiled against
libdb4.2 (dunno what is mandating this dependency...), I guess it'll
take very little to package 0.3[5-9]...

bye, lele.

There is no requirement for BDB 4.2. Subversion will run with BDB 4.0.14
just as well. Not having access to BDB 4.2.52 should not withhold anyone from
packaging Subversion...

bye,

Erik.

If it's exactly the same type of machine with exactly the same operating
system, you could just copy the files. This is very sensitive to changes
in machine architecture, operating system, and library versions though.
It might not work and is risky.

You should probably do a dump/load cycle:

svnadmin dump /path/to/repos > dumpfile
(copy dumpfile to new machine)
svnadmin create /path/to/newrepos
svnadmin load /path/to/newrepos < dumpfile

More info in the book:

Cheers,
Mike.

What is the easiest way to move the repository from one machine to another?
Or the best options to do this?
Also would i need to the directory structure over also?

The main obstacle is the dependency on DB 4.2. DB 4.2 has recently become
available in Debian unstable, and now only libapr0 from Apache 2 has to
be recompiled and linked against DB 4.2.

Check <http://bugs.debian.org/cgi-bin/bugreport.cgi?bug=222353> for
progress.

I looked up the maintainer, David Kimdon (dwhedon@debian.org). Maybe it is
best to forward your request to him?

Please post his answer here again, I am also interested!

Pim
