Http Authenticaton (Basic)

Is it possible to authenticate clients for proxy services using http
authentication?

basic authentication, is this correct?

If so, what is the best option:

     *  deploy synapse in a servlet container?
     *  use some other axis2 conformant http transport that supports
basic authentication  (if anyone exists) ?
     *  ... ?
