Defining New Protocols

I wish to add a test suite that will exercise our server code. The server code
interface uses SOAP, and I want to define data such as say employee name, and
id, then send this data to a SOAP defined method on our server, the server then
adds/manipulates this employee data. I will view the results of this over time
and load, that is my intent.
Is this the correct use of JMeter? Am I right in saying that I need to add my
test suite at the Protocol level? everything else looks like a building block or
a component. If I should add my test suite at the Protocol Level, are there any
guidelines or examples available. Note I tried to simply add a new protocol at
the java package level. When I ran JMeter it did add it as a menu option in its
Generative Controls list, but indicated that 'Sorry this feature (Edit) is not
yet implemented, when I selected it. So looks like there is a setup process, and
I have been fumbling around trying to understand/find it.
Any help/guidance is greatly appreciated.
