[DISCUSS] Apache Iceberg 1.10.0 release
As discussed in the community sync, we are planning for the next 1.10.0
release. I will serve as the release manager after chatting with Russel
(the original RM volunteer).
The adoption of V3 spec changes
<https://github.com/apache/iceberg/blob/main/format/spec.md#version-3-extended-types-and-capabilities>
has been just approved. One of the main goals for this release is to
complete the reference implementation for most V3 features.
There are also other important changes ready.
* Spark 4.0 support
* Flink 2.0 support
The target date for this release is the end of June. There is already an
"Iceberg 1.10.0" milestone. Feel free to add relevant PRs and issues to the
milestone for tracking purposes.
Thanks,
Steven

Okay, I will try it out. If there are any issues, I will propose PR
corrections

Hi Steven,
Could you please include the following PRs, all related to authentication:
https://github.com/apache/iceberg/pull/13215
https://github.com/apache/iceberg/pull/12562
https://github.com/apache/iceberg/pull/12563
The first one is a fix for a performance degradation in request
signing and imo should really be part of 1.10. The other two are
nice-to-haves.
Thanks,
Alex

ConradJam, that should already work for a while now. I don't think we have
the exact Spark smoke test coverage as you described. But I can see that
Spark "testRemoveDanglingDVsAfterCompaction" creates a V3 table and
performs delete compaction.

JB, please set the milestone to the multi-arg transform PRs/issues.
Peter/Max, ack on the changes targeted for 1.10. Let's see if they can be
reviewed and ready.
Max, the initial plan is to cut the release branch on June 23. We can
confirm or fine tune the date as we evaluate the status of the reference v3
implementations when it is close to June 23.
@All, I created a doc to track the v3 spec reference implementation. I
tagged folks to get a sense of the status of the reference implementations
for v3 features.

Hi Steven,
When do you plan to cut the release branch? I would like to get
https://github.com/apache/iceberg/pull/12424 in.
Thanks,
Max

I think I have multi-args transforms in good shape to be in the scope
for 1.10.0. Related to V3 spec, it would be great to include it in
1.10.0 release.
Thanks !

Could we at least get the new File Format API in. Not the actual
implementation, but the API itself?
I would love to move forward with it, but I still need reviews from the
fellow community members.
Thanks,
Peter

Thanks Steven! I know we are going to have a busy June but I think pretty
much everything (except Geo Types) is close to being ready
in the reference Spark implementation.
