I was experiencing simular problems with my own
use of the style option from ant, as well as 
weird null pointer exceptions (read internal
xalan errors) using xalan on a busy website.

Both problems seem to be related to
multithreaded use of xalan.
The first problem seems to be solved for my
build file in the current CVS version. The other
problem is very hard to reproduce.

Could you check wheter your ant/style problem
is also solved with the current version of
CVS as that would give me some confidence that
my other problem may also be fixed.
