about portlet layouts

Hello,

I am using VelocityTwoColumns layout for portlet layouts..
But due to my applications html design its not displaying 
correctly.. So i directly edited layout.vm ..simply commented all the
div tags code so that the content will be rendered as it is ..

I wanted to know how i can create my own layout .. Do i have to write 
***LayoutPortlet class. 

Any documentation regarding this will help alot.
