Connection between ListenerStart and clustering

Hi List,

Maybe this is a very stupid question, but I am wondering whether a
ListenerStart of an application could be related in any possible way to
problems with the Tomcat cluster?

Thanks in advance.

I pressed send too quickly.

How can it be that most of the time Tomcat starts, and sometimes it spits
out the ClassNotFound error? I suppose that the classloading order does not
change from day to day?

Hi again Rainer,

It seems some of our software updates must have solved the issue, as it's
been working perfectly now for several weeks.
I think we may conclude that it didn't had to do with the the clustering
implementation.
I feel sorry that you put time into patching the issue. In case the problem
ever comes up again, the first thing I'll do is test the patch you've sent.

Thanks a lot.

Hi Rainer,

I'm sorry for the long delay in getting back to you.
I got sidetracked by another issue and wasn't able to look into this
earlier.

However, the bad news is that the administrators didn't allow me to apply
the patch as it is a production server.
I can apply it to pre-production, but the error isn't reproducable there...

2nd however; It's been 12 days since we've seen the listenerStart error due
to the classDefNotFound (in production).
I need to check with the developers whether they accidentily made any
changes that might have solved this problem.
It might as well be that we have been lucky and that the error starts
appearing again tomorrow.

I will try to reproduce the problem in another server, in order to try out
the patch you supplied.

Thanks again.

You can find a patched catalina-ha.jar and in case you are interested
also the respective source code file at

http://people.apache.org/~rjung/patches/tc6-cluster-context-startup-order.zip

I did a one to one port from TC 5.5 to TC 6.0. So please test carefully
and let us know the results, so we can include the patch into the
standard code in case it proves it helps.

Taking into account that this is a production server, it won't be easy to
play with it, but I can propose to take 2 nodes out of the cluster to do
testing with.

<wild guess>
I remember problems with clustering which were of the following kind:
session replication data was received on a node although the context
wasn't yet fully initialized.

Maybe we run into classloader troubles in that case?

This could only happen if another node in the cluster is running all the
time between stop and restart of the node, which logs the exception.

How easy can your reproduce the problem? In case I provide a patch,
could you test, whether the problem goes away?
</wild guess>

Re: Connection between ListenerStart and clustering

Posted by Bocalinda <bo...@gmail.com>.
I was able to check whether the class (ContextLoaderListener) is copied in
different places.
I can confirm that the class is only located in my webapp under WEB-INF/lib.
(Inside spring.jar and spring-web.jar).

The mystery gets bigger and bigger for me :)

To resume, my Tomcat works most of the time, but sometimes when I start I
get a ListenerStart Error because of a ClassDefNotFound error referencing
org.springframework.web.context.ContextLoaderListener.

Note. This happens after stopping and starting Tomcat again. I'm not
deploying any newer libraries or whatsoever.
In case it's useful, the web.xml of the webapp:

Is one a proper subset of the other? If so, it can be removed without ill effect.

I'm not familiar with Spring so, I can't really comment. Others on the list do have experience in that area.

On the other hand. I just investigated this, and it seems that although both
have the class, they both need to be there in order for Spring to work.

Guess I will have to keep investigating.

I currently don't have access to the server to check catalina_home/lib
contents, but I do have the webapp.war here. So I did a grep for the
ContextLoaderListener and it turns out there are 2 libraries in my
web-inf/lib containing a class definition for that:

spring-2.5.6.jar and spring-web-2.5.6.jar

Maybe one is interfering with the other

Different messages arriving in a different order, for one. Classes are only loaded on demand, not simply because they exist in a defined library.

> I would suppose the classloading ritual is a serial process,

Nope. In a multi-threaded environment, you cannot predict who's going to reference what class first, unless you have extremely tight control over event ordering. There is a very, very small period when there's a global lock set during classloading, but other than that, it's pretty much a free-for-all.

Adding more variable message sources and sinks will always create more timing windows. But since this is not an issue observed elsewhere, the problem is most likely with your setup.

You keep referring to common/lib but stated earlier that you're running on 6.0.20, and common/lib does not exist on that level; have you modified conf/catalina.properties to utilize that directory? If so, why, and what happens if you keep things as they were intended?

can a classloading order be changed from one minute to the other? I would
suppose the classloading ritual is a serial process, instead of a parallel
process. First A than B. And not; "let's start A and B at the same time and
hope that A finishes first."

Can a clustering problem be at the root of this problem, and thus cause some
kind of timing issue and load the classes in a different order?

That I did not say :) I need will need to check that tomorrow. What I'm
saying is that I don't think that any class in common/lib references to
spring.

As I recall, the webapp classloader takes precedence over the system classloader (the -cp path handler), but I'd have to check the code to be sure. Also, on Tomcat 6, there is no shared lib directory, unless you have modified conf/catalina.properties.

> In which case I don't understand why my webapp complains

Timing issues can cause things to be loaded in a different order; if the class from Tomcat's lib or the system classpath gets loaded first, you will not be able to cast references to its objects to the class in WEB-INF/lib directory. This often results in the somewhat misleading NCDFE.

So the Spring jars exist *only* in WEB-INF/lib?

Re: Connection between ListenerStart and clustering

Posted by Bocalinda <bo...@gmail.com>.
Hi Chuck,

That's a good point. First thing in the morning I will check out.

I know the basics of the Tomcat classloading principle. However, I'm trying
to imagine myself the situation where a duplication of a class leads to an
ClassNotFound error (It's quite ironic honestly :))

If I'm not wrong Tomcat loads it classes in the following order:

1. bootstrap
2. classpath classes
3. webapps classes/libs
4. common libs
5. shared libs

Let's say that my webapp uses a class that is both placed in web-inf/lib and
common/lib. According to the classloading order, the class that is in my
web-inf/lib should be loaded first. In which case I don't understand why my
webapp complains that it can't find the class...

The only thing I can think of is that my webapp's classloader loads class X
from web-inf/lib, and that this class is used by some other class in
common/lib.

Although, I don't think this is the case in my situation. Spring is only
used inside my webapp.

I'm probably overseeing something basic here, and would really appreciate it
if somebody could point me out what it is.

Thanks

Is the class perhaps in too many places? It must not appear in more than one location in any given branch of the classloader tree. For example, you must not place the class in both Tomcat's lib directory and the webapp's WEB-INF/lib directory - it has to be one or the other.

Re: Connection between ListenerStart and clustering

Posted by Bocalinda <bo...@gmail.com>.
Hi, I'm back again.

I figured out why I got a ListenerStart Error, or at least, I got a nicer
error message.
However, I don't get it why my Tomcat servers start sometimes without
problems, and other times show the ListenerStart Error.

After restarting Tomcat a few times, the problem automatically goes away.

This is the error that I got:

Correct, not denying nor confirming. I'm informing you that your log

Hi Filip.

I'm using version 6.0.20.

listenerStart error will have a stack trace in another log file
depending on what version of Tomcat you are using.
That stack trace will take out the guess work of what actually went wrong
