Bringing DataVision into Apache
Hi everyone... allow me to introduce myself... my name is Frank Zammetti.
I am the current project lead for DataVision, which I know OfBiz uses :)
The reason I'm writing here is that I am currently starting to work on
bringing DataVision into Apache, and it was suggested by a current Apache
member, and I absolutely agreed, that posting to this list might be a good
way to find like-minded individuals who might be interested in helping
with this endeavor.
All that's been done at this point is writing of a proposal and RFC'ing it
to the DataVision user list. This was only yesterday, so clearly it's
early :)
I can post the proposal here if anyone would like me to, but I've
refrained from doing so this first message in case there's no interest. I
think with OfBiz using DataVision, it certainly is a reasonable thing to
bring up here.
In general, I think bringing DataVision into Apache would have a lot of
benefits all around, and hopefully I'm not alone in that thinking. I know
that Jim Menard, the originator of DataVision, whole-heartedly supports it
as well.
So, feel free to make whatever comments you'd like, ask whatever questions
you'd like, and of course pitch in if you have the itch!

FYI, Jim had no objection, so as of tonight (well, let's say this
weekend just to be safe!) DataVision will be under ASL 2.0.

Interesting... I only said OfBiz uses it based on the info Jim has on
the DataVision page in the "Projects Using DataVision" section... I
wonder if maybe it did use it at one point because I do see the same
class Christian mentioned, as well as the JAR and entries for it in some
.classpath files... perhaps this is just a dead usage that wasn't fully
cleaned up? Obviously I'm no OfBiz expert though, so I'll take your
word on it :)
Anyway, I certainly agree, there's some work to be done from the legal
aspect... upgrading to the 2.0 license I don't suspect would be any
problem whatsoever (in fact, I'll go mention this to Jim and if he has
no objections, I'll bump it up tonight on the DV site and in TRUNK...
might as well get any of the easy steps done before pushing ahead with
anything).

AFAIK there are no use of DataVision in OFBiz. But if DataVision become
Apache 2 licenced this may change... From
http://datavision.sourceforge.net/DataVision/legal.html I guess there is
some work ahead... Not much though.
Please consider this comment as my personnal opinion and not

I can do you one better: I didn't know what OfBiz was :)
In talking to the Apache member who was giving me some initial guidance on
this, he suggested posting to the OfBiz list... so I went looking on the
main Apache page under the mailing lists link because I thought OfBiz must
be short for "Official Business"! Later, while constructing the proposal,
I noticed OfBiz mentioned as a user of DV on the DV home page, and then it
all fell into place :)
Was a confusing hour or two though :)

I didn't know that OFBiz uses DataVision ;-)
Looking at the source I found DataVisionViewHandler.java and
DataVision.jar.
There's *seems* to be one usage in webtools (UomReport) but no
request-map for it...
Hopefully someone else can tell more about DataVision usage in OFBiz
