problem with 4.0.4 & 4.1.9 rpms?

i'm trying to install tomcat4 from the rpms available, but i seem to
have problems with both the 4.0.4 and 4.1.9 rpms available (on two
different machines). they both fail with the following:

error: unpacking of archive failed on file /var/tomcat4/conf: cpio:
rename failed - Is a directory

and then there is a weird entry in the /var/tomcat4/ directory like:

  conf;3d650429

the numbers after 'conf;' change each time i try.

i have installed other things on both of these machines recently, so i'm
confident that rpm works ( i removed and updated java on the one server
without problems ).

is anyone else having problems with them? i know the 4.1.9 is very
recent, but the 4.0.4 has been out a while.

what could the problem be? any suggestions?
