What version were  you testing with? This used to be a major problem because we kept all of stderr and stdout from the tests in memory, but should be much better in the last few weeks.

This doesn't happen with a 1.5 JDK.  Perhaps the core Java libraries changed in some unhelpful way between 1.5 and 1.6?  Could be my environment, too, but I'm skeptical of that since it happens on both my Linux box and my iBook.
