Authorization header truncation problem

I'm trying to write an authentication scheme to plug into HttpClient 3.0.

I'm having trouble, the Authorization header appears to be truncated, at
1423 characters.

Is there an artificial limit? In the log file the "wire.header" line
appears to be logging the correct output, but it doesn't appear "on the
wire".

The correct header line should be about 4-5Kb.
