maven-scm-plugin sometimes fails to checkin file

I have the plugin configured to checkin a built ear file into CVS.The
configuration is shown below :
      <execution>
        <id>checkin-ear</id>
        <phase>post-integration-test</phase>
        <configuration>
        <connectionUrl>scm:cvs:pserver:jeffm:jeffm@165.148.216.16:/var/lib/cvsroot:Eportal/depl/eportal-releases/eportal/dev3</connectionUrl>
        <includes>"**/*.ear"</includes>
        <message>Maven ear file commit</message>
        <workingDirectory>target/checkout</workingDirectory>
       </configuration>
       <goals>
       <goal>checkin</goal>
      </goals>
      </execution>


However , sometimes the checkin does not go through , even though
there's no error message.I can see from browsing the repository that
the commit didnt happen since  the version  of the ear file in CVS
remains the same, as well as the last commit date.The output I get  is

Sometimes it works.What could be causing this?
