Registering 401 error handling script

I'm trying to register a .esp to handle 401 Not Authorized errors, but
I can't get Sling to use it. Instead, I'm getting the standard 401
page as produced by Jetty.
I have a 404.esp in the same folder, which is invoked as expected.

Is the 401 script supposed to be supported, or are there limitations
to what errors could be handled by scripts?
