[Lucene-dev] jakarta (fwd)

Is the rest of the PMC interested in seeing this happen? (I am and will
be the PMC sponsor).

Lucene is a Java based search engine. Current license is LGPL, but Doug
is willing to switch things over to us. It has a developer community and
a user base (yes, I have commit status). Doug is a search engine god and
knows his stuff and this is a really top notch product. Years ago, he
worked on the vtwin project within Apple and I was an external alpha/beta
test member of that project as well.

It will fit in well with Jakarta because this is something that a lot of
server based projects can use (and already do). Switching the license is
also a big plus for the code base. Having it under Jakarta will also give
it more visibility and I'm sure the project will thrive.

He doesn't really have the time to maintain the project any longer, but
since there is an active community around it already, brining it within
Jakarta will bring over those developers and they all want to work within
Jakarta.

Watcha think?

I think it would be great if someone wants to push Lucene into Jakarta.
Unfortunately I don't have time right now and so cannot own this process, so
someone else will have to do it. I will however gladly sign over the
license to Apache if and when that is required.

Doug
