Xerces 1.60 on AIX using gcc/g++

I was trying to build the Xerces 1.60 using gcc/g++ on AIX 4.3.  Following
the instructions, I was able to build all of the object files.  At the
linking stage, however, the link requires "makeC++SharedLib_r".  My system
does not have xlC installed.  Does this mean that I cannot use gcc/g++ on
AIX to successfully compile/link the xerces library?
