Transmogrifying email ids.

Hi all,

I am using James 1.2 and have a problem. The problem may not be related
directly do James itself, but I am hoping that somebody in this list
will be able to help me out on this.

I have two mail server machines - say xyz.obvious.com and
abc.obvious.com (I am using fictitious names here). The machine
xyz.obvious.com is used for corporate email and hosts a sendmail server.
The machine abc.obvious.com is used by me and hosts a James server.
abc.obvious.com is also known by another name called alias.obvious.com.
Both abc.obvious.com and alias.obvious.com are on public DNS.

The problem is -- whenever mail gets sent from xyz.obvious.com to a
user@abc.obvious.com, it gets changed to user@alias.obvious.com at the
_sendmail_ server. The mail is then forwarded to the James server with
the intended recipient being user@alias.obvious.com (instead of the
expected user@abc.obvious.com). This causes a mailet that I wrote to
screw up things.

I am pasting output from netfile.log here....

========== Paste begin ==================

2001.04.17 12:33:59 605 (INFO) from SMTP: Command received: EHLO

im-db2.san.vayusphere.com (216.37.98.178)
2001.04.17 12:34:00 164 (DEBUG) from SMTP: Executing handler.

============= Paste end ============================

What is the problem all about? Why is this happening? What is the fix?

Your help is greatly appreciated.

Thanks,
Prasanna.

Exactly my question! :-) Why the hell is sendmail doing that? Is there some kind
of a setting in sendmail that causes it to do that? I am not a sendmail expert
so any pointers will be appreciated.

It seems like you solved your own problem? You say sendmail changes the
email address from user@abc.obvious.com to user@alias.obvious.com, and then
James receives the email to user@alias.obvious.com. If you want James to
receive the email as user@abc.obvious.com, then sendmail should not make the
change it's making.
