Building the express-demo portlet application tutorial

I'm attempting to build the express-demo portlet using maven and keep
getting an error on the build saying:

[INFO] Scanning for projects...
Downloading:
http://repo1.maven.org/maven2/org/apache/portals/tutorials/portal-applications/1.0/portal-applications-1.0.pom
[INFO]
------------------------------------------------------------------------
[ERROR] FATAL ERROR
[INFO]
------------------------------------------------------------------------
[INFO] Failed to resolve artifact.

GroupId: org.apache.portals.tutorials
ArtifactId: portal-applications
Version: 1.0

Reason: Unable to download the artifact from any repository

  org.apache.portals.tutorials:portal-applications:pom:1.0


This makes sense as the file indeed does not exist at repo1.maven.org.  Does
anyone know where to find this file or how to resolve this issue?

I think you have to build from the root project first.

We will be deprecating the current Maven-2 build in January.
