UK Hadoop User Group Meeting

Forwarded from someone on Hadoop: http://upcoming.yahoo.com/event/506444/

Would be cool to have anyone in the UK from Mahout attend.

Yep, we haven't made any official releases yet, so you have to get it
from trunk:

svn checkout https://svn.apache.org/repos/asf/lucene/mahout/trunk

That's a good idea and would be a nice starting point for my student.

Forgive my ignorance, but where can I find the code? I can't see anything
to download here:

http://lucene.apache.org/mahout/releases.html#Downloads

(this seems empty right now)

Thanks a lot. I'm eagerly waiting for this book:)

As one of the authors, it will introduce pieces of Mahout (namely a
section on clustering and one on naive bayes, if and when I can get
some time from my job to finish it), but it will not be "Mahout in
Action", if that is what you are looking for, which, as Lukas said
will hopefully happen in the future (although I don't think I am
volunteering for it). For the record, it will cover things like Solr,
OpenNLP, Carrot^2 and other clustering techniques, maybe some stuff on
graph ranking, and a chapter or two to tie them together, but these
last two pieces are still TBD. The basic gist is there are all of
these pretty good open source tools for going beyond pure search.

Hi,

I am not committer nor can I speak for them but I think that Mahout is in
too early stage to be in book now. No doubt Mahout will be in books in the
future but not now I think (considering the fact that writing a book takes
some time and development on Mahout just got started...).

I met with him yesterday and forwarded him that Mahout Canopy Clustering
link. So here is hoping!

(What I would like would be for him to additionally look at locality
sensitive hashing and/or do log-linear training over Hadoop)

Hello,

I saw manning will publish a book Taming Text whose authers are mahout developers. Will this book introduce the usage of mahout? Thanks.

Contributions to the projects would of course be welcome as well if your
students do well.

Have you tried Mahout's canopy clustering? If it is close to what you
need, that would give you the time for the latter task. Of course,
feedback on our code would be great.

I'm a new Mahout lurker and will be attending this

As an aside, this summer I have two MSc projects implementing various
machine learning stuff using Hadoop; the first one will probably be canopy
clustering and --time permitting-- discriminative training for log-linear
models; the other project will look at simple smoothed relative frequency
models (ie language modelling).
