Strange username issue with apache 1.3.19 and IE 5.5

anyone seen this?:

We have a subdomain set up for a client and we had a username and password
setup with one letter in uppercase and the rest lowercase.  When sent
through IE 5.0 it wouldn't authenticate if the username was sent through all
lowercase but in 5.5 it would.

Which tells me I probably need to check the changelogs for Apache and
upgrade (whenever I get the time), I just wanted to see if anyone ever has
seen this type of behavior.
