In the future, you will generally get a quicker answer to hbase
questions by subscribing to hbase-user@hadoop.apache.org

There are a couple of ways for a non-hadoop client to access
hbase:
- via Thrift
- via the REST interface
- install hbase on the client with configuration files that
  point to your hbase instance running on hadoop
