Do you plan on adding any more information about write cache to this issue?  Otherwise think this should get closed after you got your system running with the workaround.  Derby can get checksum errors if the system crashes while only writing part of page, it is coded to recognize the problem and then supported recovery is to recover from backup.  Running with write cache enabled probably makes the problem even easier to get.
