[PROPOSAL/DISCUSSION] Apache Karaf new website

Hello,

Some of you might be knowing it, some of you might not but I have been
working on a new look&feel for the Karaf website.
I'm not a web developer so I have done my best to craft a new website
proposal.
I have used HTML, CSS and the Bootstrap 3 framework.

Here is the magic link: http://mhautman.com/karaf-site/

I have also tried to incorporate the new asciidoc manual(html) in the
website but honestly this is a real pain, if someone got a easy solution
for this. Please let me know otherwise I will just make it open in a new
tab.
Here is what I mean with incorporate:
http://mhautman.com/karaf-site/manual.html

Any comments, hints, tips is more then welcome, so please shoot!

Regards,
Morgan

Hi Morgan,

here's my comments:

1/ I like the top menu
2/ the title banner (containing Karaf logo and ASF logo) is too large
3/ the ASF logo is the "old" one, I will send to you a new one
4/ Synopsis can be removed (not useful)
5/ I would prefer a very light welcome page (a bit like on spring.io or
so), but it's on my bucket (as it's more related to the content).

Thanks !
Regards
JB

I really like the layout with the menu on top, Karaf logo below (which
folds away).
The layout of submenu and content below also is great. The layout also
adapts very well to different screen sizes down to mobile.

What I like less is the colors. I also think the apache logo and powered
by apache is too large. I would rather put this in a less prominent
spot. We might use the space there
to explain the scope of karaf in some concise way.

Hi Morgan,

Agree on the points. I would just add to prepare a "light" welcome page,
containing three sections squares.

I will send to you the ASF logo and Karaf logo asap.

Thanks,
Regards
JB

[PROPOSAL/DISCUSSION] Apache Karaf new website summary

Posted by Morgan Hautman <mo...@gmail.com>.
Hello,

First of all, thank you all for so much feedback! I really appreciate it.

Let's summarize a bit what everyone said:

- The look&feel on phone is very very less readable and it doesn't work
well. We all agree on this. Like Achim said I also thought Bootstrap
helped on this or maybe I used it wrong. (to check)
- The menu and the top "div" with the logo's in it, have colors who are
to dark.
- The top "div" with the logo's in it, is too large. (height)
- The contrast between the font color and menu is not enough. (That will
change when to colors will be less dark)

If I forgot something please mention it.

If people want to play with it , let me know and I 'll put it on Github.

I will submit new proposals when I have done some improvements.

Again, Thank you all!

@JB: I 'll be waiting for the new ASF logo, the Karaf logo gimp project
and some more appropriate content to display on the homepage.

Regards,
Morgan

Great work !

I think the logo on the dark blue background is unreadable, there's not
enough contrast between the logo and the background. I think this is also
true for the menu which are middle gray, and do not contrast enough.
Either we need to lighten the background (kinda same as we had before), or
we need to invert the logo and make the menu very light gray.
The menu selection is not contrasted enough too.

The size of the upper bar (menu + logo) is way too big imho. Well, it
depends if this is only supposed to be for the home page or for other pages
too.

Cheers,
Guillaume
