ApacheCon Slides
ApacheCon required that we upload our slide decks by today. I just posted
my slides. If you have time, please take a look and let me know if you
think I should make changes. The FlexJS session is essentially the same
as the 360|Stack presentation from last year.

Found out how to do it ... great you have 1000 Places where you can add shadows in PowerPoint ... it was the "Formeffects" where not the font or the slide had a shadow, but the Frame containing the text ... well at least the shadow's gone now ;-)

Hi Justin ...
Have to admit that it seems to be easier to extend Flexmojos than dropping that dam shadow ;-) Tried the "Shadow" effect, but that added even more shadow ... it was somehow part of the template they gave us ... perhaps Alex can give me a tip.
Even when switching the font that too had a shadow ;-)

You may want to consider dropping the drop shadow on the text IMO makes it a little hard to read.

I looked into this slide:
Why FlexJS?
Adobe Flash Player used to be in every browser Adobe AIR used to run on most computers Executives no longer carry Flash-capable devices AIR apps require installation and upgrades AIR apps have some fidelity issues Flash-based solutions no longer desirable Large MXML and ActionScript code bases
I honestly felt that it's depicting flex\flash in a negative way.
Subject says 'Why FlexJS?', but instead it talks 'Why we shouldn't use flex\flash'. Flex is so popular because the way it is(running on flash player with super rich UI). Only problem is it cannot run on mobile devices on browser because of flash player limitation. And this is where FlexJS comes into picture. And I feel we need to portray FlexJS as a powerful alternative for running flex based apps on mobile browsers.
I don't think FlexJS would give exact same output as flash player. And hence I would strongly encourage my customers to use our flex applications on desktops\laptops and I would give a alternative app(compiled with
FlexJS) for their mobile browsers, which would be light weight.
I am assuming that FlexJS would be used to convert MXML\ActionScript code.
And if we say 'Flash based solutions no longer desirable' and if people stop creating flex applications, then the whole purpose of FlexJS would get defeated, I reckon.
That was my perspective. I don't know, all those pointers may sound correct for some too. May be it all depends on how each individual would take it :)
Agree with Om regarding a mention of new features\enhancements\skinning.

Re: ApacheCon Slides

My 2 cents:
I see no reason for folks to not adopt FlexJS, if we do good marketing.
Also, I had voiced this opinion earlier - FlexJS is a new SDK being built
from scratch. Forgetting the JS part, it is a chance to right a lot of
wrongs that have been accumulated with the current Flex SDK (which is
already miles ahead of any of the JS frameworks out there)
Nothing is going to prevent me from building a pure Flash/AIR based FlexJS
project. That will let me carry over all of my model and business logic
code, but let me build a more lightweight UI with on-demand features.
And since it is being built from scratch, if someone wants to add
Stage3D/Starling capabilities, it is much easier (than adapting the current
Flex SDK to use Starling, for example)
This is the reason why I think that FlexJS is a misnomer. It is really
FlexReimagined with support for Flash, AIR and JS/HTML.
Thanks,
Om

You are welcome to your option/opinion, but the few folks I've talked to
make me think differently.
Some folks haven't moved from Flex to JS and if they decide to move
someday will be a lot of work and if FlexJS is less work, we become a
viable choice. It is important to set expectations. If we make folks
expect a 1:1 drop-in, we will likely disappoint, at least in early builds.
And then there's folks who might be interested in making new apps that
truly run everywhere. All of those other JS frameworks had 0 users at one
point in time.
And like I said, nobody at Adobe said I couldn't try, and I've got all day
to try :-)

The key phrase is "at this point". And for some, who can choose the
hardware and OS versions of their customers (probably intranet apps which
was the focus of Flex in the past), you may always be able to use Flash.
But down the road if things change and pressure builds to get your app to
work somewhere Flash/AIR doesn't, hopefully FlexJS will be there to make
it realistic to convert to JS. It won't be zero work, but will hopefully
be significantly better than porting every line of code to some other JS
framework.

I'm aligned more with Justin on this part. It is fantastic to continue to grow and mature new things aligned to the needs of the Flex community. But just a view point from our perspective here.
We have 15 applications in total. These are all web based flex/flash based medium business level applications that are data driven. It is unrealistic for us to do a large conversion to JS of any type at this point. However it will always be good to have the option to maybe make new applications in the new FlexJS framework when it's matured enough.

My option on this is this:
Unless it's a drop in 1 for 1 replacement I don't think the take up is going to be huge. People with existing Flex browser apps who were considering converting to JS have already done that by now and have selected a different framework/technology stack, and those who haven't converted aren't going to want to spend the time/money on learning a new frameworks and rewriting all of their UI code.
While the appeal of still using AS and being able to reuse say 80% of your code the down side is that the UI stuff is hard and tricky to get right and takes the most time.
They may also see (correctly or not) a 1.0 release of a framework a bit risky compared to more mature frameworks out there.
Then there's the often narrow minded hiring practices around frameworks in which they ask for 5+ year experiences with framework x rather than ability to learn and solid experience with other frameworks/AS/JS.
All of the above matches with my recent experience with existing/past/new clients - but as they say your milage may vary.

The number one responsibility of any Apache project is to it's users. Just about every project guidelines (including ours) has words to the effect of "The most important participants in the project are people who use our software."

I agree with the first sentence : I also think current users of Apache Flex are related to "established Flex projects", that moved from Adobe to Apache.
However, regarding the market of Flex consultant/contractors, I think most have left for good, that was probably a difficult decision for them to take, so they won't come back, for the most part.
I think Flex has shifted from buzz / mass / trendy market (like HTML5 now) to niche market of passionate guys that truly believe Flex is superior (like Apple fans in the early days), or simply people/companies who has massively invested in Flex and can't afford moving to something else for financial reasons.
So should we measure our success on our ability to recover the developers that left Flex, or in making happy the fewer ones that stayed with us?
Besides, I think there also a new category of Flex developers that are attracted by development on mobile platforms, probably because it covers the main mobile platforms, and seems easier/more fun than e.g. writing native apps with XCode and Objective C.
What do you think?

While we should be proud of our install numbers, I think they may be more related to the transition from Adobe Flex to Apache Flex for folks with established Flex projects. There was a whole market of independent consultants/contractors who were making good money creating Flex apps for more than one client. I'm not sure they have recovered. We'll know we are truly on our way to success when we start hearing from those folks again.
And if you independents are out there and have recovered or have ideas on how Apache Flex can better serve you, please let us know.

Re: ApacheCon Slides
Posted by Alex Harui <ah...@adobe.com>.
While we should be proud of our install numbers, I think they may be more
related to the transition from Adobe Flex to Apache Flex for folks with
established Flex projects. There was a whole market of independent
consultants/contractors who were making good money creating Flex apps for
more than one client. I'm not sure they have recovered. We'll know we
are truly on our way to success when we start hearing from those folks
again.
And if you independents are out there and have recovered or have ideas on
how Apache Flex can better serve you, please let us know.

JFYI since we've released 4.12 China and USA account for 400+ installs each, and there's been 66 installs in Poland (out of a total of 3,113), Australia's (where I'm from) has only had 54 and I know a few of those are me :-)

Hi,
@Deepak MS Flex is so popular - I don't think so, maybe in US or China. Here
in Poland I got serious difficulties to found proper job as a Flex developer
2 months ago and had to move to another city because of that.
More over I got one talk with some of the global outsourcing company and
some recruiter called me after sending him my CV and she asked me - "What is
Flex?" :) I'm not the only one who has such difficulties, so unfortunately
in Poland flex is not so popular.

Re: ApacheCon Slides

I'm definitely not a marketing person so suggestions are welcome. We
should probably start another thread on it. I like the FlexJS name right
now because I think it is important to get the attention of the JS
developers, but maybe there's a better or additional tag line besides
"Flex for JavaScript".
And Om is right that FlexJS isn't just for cross-compiling. I expect
folks to add new libraries to FlexJS that don't have a JS equivalent and
can therefore only be used with Flash. With the beads plug-ins, your app
can have capabilities on Flash that it can't have on JS (and vice versa).
And as Om also suggested you can choose to never cross-compile and simply
create lighter faster Flash apps.
I can imagine having a different release package that includes
Flash-dependent libraries under a different name. I don't think we'd call
that Flex 5 because that would imply 1:1 parity, and good names like
Re-Flex are already taken. Suggestions for names for something like this
is also welcome.

Re: ApacheCon Slides

I looked into this slide:
Why FlexJS?
Adobe Flash Player used to be in every browser
Adobe AIR used to run on most computers
Executives no longer carry Flash-capable devices
AIR apps require installation and upgrades
AIR apps have some fidelity issues
Flash-based solutions no longer desirable
Large MXML and ActionScript code bases
I honestly felt that it's depicting flex\flash in a negative way.
Subject says 'Why FlexJS?', but instead it talks 'Why we shouldn't use
flex\flash'. Flex is so popular because the way it is(running on flash
player with super rich UI). Only problem is it cannot run on mobile devices
on browser because of flash player limitation. And this is where FlexJS
comes into picture. And I feel we need to portray FlexJS as a powerful
alternative for running flex based apps on mobile browsers.
I don't think FlexJS would give exact same output as flash player. And
hence I would strongly encourage my customers to use our flex applications
on desktops\laptops and I would give a alternative app(compiled with
FlexJS) for their mobile browsers, which would be light weight.
I am assuming that FlexJS would be used to convert MXML\ActionScript code.
And if we say 'Flash based solutions no longer desirable' and if people
stop creating flex applications, then the whole purpose of FlexJS would get
defeated, I reckon.
That was my perspective. I don't know, all those pointers may sound correct
for some too. May be it all depends on how each individual would take it :)
Agree with Om regarding a mention of new features\enhancements\skinning.

Will definitely give that speech a test-run next Tuesday at the company I currently work for.
But I think I have to speed up my talk a little ;-)

I took the numbers Justin posted a few days ago ... if it's 40000 that's great and I'll update that too ... wanted to add a note that it will be more as in Flexmojos using companies sometimes one install could be used by a lot of users.

Chris, a couple of points:
1. You seem to switch between the terms 'Flex SDK' and 'FDK' midpoint in the presentation. I think we should all be consistently using the term 'Flex SDK'.
2. The numbers on slide 32 is a outdated. We have more than 40,000 installs of the Flex SDK since we started keeping track.
3. Agree with Justin on the shadow of the text.
Otherwise, great job!

Maybe I didn't understand what you meant by "wizard logic".
That being said, this discussion is getting out-of-topic, so sorry for starting it and for the noise.

But I think it's not only appearance ... that's the Point. At least what I especially like about Flex skinning.
In GWT and other alternatives you kann only control the layout and formatting, but in Flex you can also have an alternate usability pattern.
I couldn't create a "User Dialog" in GWT where the Desktop Skin has all fields on one Screen and on the mobile Counterpart the fields are split up in several Wizard steps. Where the Skin takes care of the Wizard Logic. After all the User Dialog doesn't care how the fields are presented as Long as they are. But perhaps that's only my Interpretation.

I mean skinning is on the appearance, not on the behavior.
So the word "usability" may be confusing.
Usually, you use skins to change the size, color, layout, etc.
So for me having two skins, one that displays all fields in one single dialog and the other in step by step wizard, Exceeds the usual scope of skinning (which does not mean it's not possible).

Hi Maurice,
Thanks for the Feedback.
- At first I wanted to say "Native mobile applications" but I can also create "native" Desktop applications with the captive runtime ... am I correct? I wanted to emphasis on mobile in my speach though.
- What is exactly the Status on Windows 8? .... I marked this read as a marker for myself ... sort of forgot to check this
- I am planning on using PowerPoint for performin the presentation ... therefore the PDF Version does not share the step by step appearance of Zombie and Smiley Pictures ;-)
- What did you want to Point out on slide 11?
- You are right, that I should lay more emphasis on how easy client-Server communication can be with Flex RemoteObjects.
- I'll also add a Slide on the IOC Frameworks ... do you have any stats on These? Which ones are most popular ... ist there a sort of comparison? X uses [Metadata] and Y uses ... Something like that?
But thanks for the Feedback ... I'll probably update the slides this evening.

Few remarks:
Slide 6: "Native Applications" => "Native mobile applications" , to avoid the confusion with AIR apps.
Slide 7:
Desktop + Web + Mobile
Slide 8:
the green smiley should not cover the flex logo
Slide 9:
IntelliJ ultimate => I think the correct name is IDEA IntelliJ (ultimate version is not required to program in Flex, but I may be wrong).
Slide 10:
Profile => you should mention Profiler included in FB Premium
Slide 11:
Different skins can have completely different usability concept . Desktop skin shows a lot of fields in a simple dialog . Mobile skin uses a step-by-step wizard approach
Slide 12:
AMF communication
=> you can also call methods in the back end and retrieve complex results, more will RPC call.
General:
I think since the slide title is "Building Enterprise Apps", maybe you should have a slide on the many DI/IOC frameworks for Flex.
Overall, greate presentation, thanks

Hi Guys,
I just uploaded my stuf a few minutes ago:
http://events.linuxfoundation.org/sites/events/files/slides/Building%20Enterprise%20Level%20Applications%20with%20Apache%20Flex%20and%20Java-v9-20140313_1547.pdf
(Noticed too late that I should have shortended the file name ;-))
I thought I'd concentrate on why Flex is great for building Enterprise applications and only briefly go into Flexmojos as this is an Apache Conference. Doing a full Flexmojos introduction would have exploded the timeframe, so I decided to describe the ecosystem, what the different fragments are and how they all together create the big picture.
Hopefully it will make a few people more interesed in Flex and guide them to the other talks (I added references tot he other talks at the end)
Feedback greatly appreciated.

So for me having two skins, one that displays all fields in one single dialog and the other in step by step wizard,
Exceeds the usual scope of skinning (which does not mean it's not possible).

Hi Maurice,
Thanks for the Feedback.

IMO 40,000+ installs of the Flex SDK say otherwise and not all of those users are going to be interested in FlexJS particularly as it's not going to be a 1 for 1 replacement.
Slide 8 you might want to add something about bug fixed/improvements over Adobe 4.6.

Hi,
Also I think both slide decks need a little more branding (Apache Flex and ASF logos) and of course the trademark statement and a link to flex.a.o wouldn't go astray.
Remember more than just attendees of ApacheCon will see these.
Thanks,
Justin

RE: ApacheCon Slides

The only negative it has is that it does not run on iOS and Android browsers.
That's true, but subtle.
And once again, we need to be careful about the possible confusion.
When you say "Flash/AIR does not run on iOS and Android browsers", some (many?) people understand "Flex does not run on iOS and Android".
It happened around me many times.
WDYT?

I agree that there is no need to ding Flash when talking about FlexJS. We are pushing releases of the Flex SDK that work on top of Flash/AIR on one side. We don't want to be saying on the other side that it is 'not a desirable' platform.
Flash/AIR has a lot of positives(technically speaking). The only negative it has is that it does not run on iOS and Android browsers. Perhaps we point to that fact that FlexJS solves this problem so that folks can continue to keep one single codebase for all major platforms in the world.

Ok, so it's on purpose.

It's a difficult matter, not easy to discuss by email, even more so writing not in my mother tongue, so sorry in advance if I get misunderstood.
You can say that FlexJS will work also on JavaScript, and I think that alone is enough to attract people, you don't need to "shoot down" on Flash.
"FlexJS is the power of MXML and AS brought to the javascript world"
And this has nothing to do with Flash, actually, but rather on the current weaknesses of javascript.
Once again, for many "non developers" around me, they don't make the difference between Flex and Flash, and statements like this one,
especially coming from "Apache Flex PMC" himself, could be harmful if they fall in "non-educated" ears.
Will it decrease the value of FlexJS, if you don't say that "Flash is not desirable anymore"?
What do others think?

Overall, the impression it gave me is that it's not describing "what's happening in Apache Flex Project", but rather an advertisement to attract new developers by telling them
"Hey, there is not only AS in Flex, there are also other technologies, Java, Maven, so don't be afraid to come help us".
Should we be ashamed of Flex being Flex, ActionScript and Flash ?
FlexJS.pdf:
I think there is a major problem with these slides, starting from page 1:
"Flex without Flash"
"Flash based solutions no longer desirable".
Etc..
For many people people Flex == Flash. So if you say "flash is not desirable anymore", they will understand Flex is not desirable anymore.
I don't think this is what we are want.
Sorry for being harsh, but I think we have had enough with Steve Jobs and Abobe PR.

ApacheCon required that we upload our slide decks by today. I just posted my slides. If you have time, please take a look and let me know if you think I should make changes. The FlexJS session is essentially the same as the 360|Stack presentation from last year.

My diagram is about the compilation process, not composition. I'll see if
it composition image fits on a slide.

The strands/beads metaphor does a very good job of explaining composition.
A few people I discussed this with seemed to have never heard this analogy
and feel that it makes a lot of sense. Which is why I think you should
probably use that concept and diagram when explaining FlexJS. If you have
a better diagram, perhaps that should go on the wiki as well ;-)

Thanks for the feedback. That diagram is a bit lower-level than I was
going to go, but I'm interested to hear why that's an important piece for
folks attending a 45 minute session. I do have another diagram from my

For FlexJS, it would be nice if you can use the beads/strands diagrams from

They do a good job of explaining the concepts visually.
