I was getting a similar error using Windows 10, but there was a description.  I
found that JAVA is required.  Since I was using EDGE (does not use JAVA), I
believe I was getting the error because JAVA was not running in EDGE.  Since it
was never being used, I deleted JAVA.  Later when I tried using Check for
Updates, I got the same error using Firefox.  I believe this was also because
JAVA was not running, because I had deleted it.  If the Check for Updates is
modified so that JAVA is no longer required, I believe this will fix the
problem I was having.
