2.4D1 and Xerces version

I have a quick question.

Would I be able to run Xalan 2.4D1 with Xerces 1.4.3? I am trying this and 
it seems to be working. I have tried it by including xalan.jar and 
xml-apis.jar along with the old xerces.jar and it seems to be working.

I was looking to see if there were any known problems or pitfalls with such 
a setup, or if anyone else has had experience with this kind of setup.
