HSSF-Serializer

Dear developers,

for one year I integrated successfully the FOP in my project and I get PDF documents from an automatic generated fo file.
Now I want to do the same thing with XLS files.
But there are 2 big problems for me:
1. Can I use the Cocoon to serialize a gnumeric xml to xls file only with the command-line interface?
2. Is it possible to merge cells with the HSSF serializer?

I hope anybody can help me.
