tabs to spaces patch for 1.2 fixes issues with latest xalan

http://issues.apache.org/bugzilla/show_bug.cgi?id=32739 disabled 
validation for new documents because the latest xalan converts tabs to 
entities.

i applied a patch by josias thoeny to fix this.
