reopening because I think this has broken in place upgrade for single process at least 1.4.11 -> current branch-2.3

after shutdown of a 1.4.11 and starting current master I hit this error:

Are there upgrade notes for the zookeeper 3.4 -> 3.5 to cover something that needs to happen that we can link in the release notes?
