AOO 4 unusable under Linux64?

Hi all,

Edwin Sharp and some other users found several bugs [1] under Linux64,
in summary the conclusion seems to be that AOO currently is more or less
unusable with Linux 64.

Can some developers please have a look?

Best regards

Rainer

In subsequent checks I installed the deb (not arc!) package using dpkg -i *.deb

A great distribution, I use that too!

Ah, that's the reason. Linux has a different development philosophy than
most other platforms. On other platforms you tell the compiler to target
a specific baseline (e.g. OSX 10.4 or Windows XP). On Linux the
philosophy used to be "just recompile if any of the libraries changed
its APIs" or "update from your system's specific package repository
where one of the maintainers did that for you". Things have gotten much
better since but selecting a target API is still not easily possible.

So to solve this for our releases we use the "greatest common
denominator" approach on Linux: Linux nowadays tries not to break older
binaries, so we're using a very old system for building the packages. A
system old enough that most current systems can work with it.

These ancient systems are how we build our releases and release snapshots.

Now the Linux64 buildbot uses Ubuntu 10.4 and the Linux32 buildbot runs
on Ubuntu 12.4. These systems are quite new and their new compilers are
much better than what is provided by the "greatest common denominator "
systems, which enables them to find and report important bugs. The
drawback is that unless your system is a descendant of these newer Linux
systems the builds they create are unusable for you.

I suggest to check the official release candidate snapshots if we're in
the release phase. They have the maximum binary compatibility.

If you want to check the latest experimental trunk releases created by
buildbots running new distributions I suggest to install that same
distribution or one of its descendants.

Dear Rainer

Not sure what is meant by Crash bug, but here is relevant information:
Current distribution I use: http://www.aptosid.com/
Original bug reports were generated via laptop using USB installation.
AOO was installed from arc file of the Buildbots.
Desktop environment was KDE.
Second check was performed using same laptop with 4.0.1 RC3 build.
Desktop environment was changed to XFCE.
Confirmation was performed with PC using HD installation.
AOO was installed from deb file of 4.0.1 RC3 build.
Desktop environment was again XFCE.

PC has following characteristics:

Hi,

it's also my suspect that the problems are related to Edwins packages or
something else very particular what affects both PC he tested, we will
need more information concerning packages, Installation, OS and so on to
find out what the roots of the problems are.

@Edwin:
Can you please gather all relevant info in a Crash bug (or a similar one
with bigger importance)?

It is usable for me. I tried to reproduce one of the problems
https://issues.apache.org/ooo/show_bug.cgi?id=123360 and I couldn't. I
tried to reproduce a few other ones and I can confirm them, but in the
cases I examined these problems are in 4.0.0 too. One of them,
https://issues.apache.org/ooo/show_bug.cgi?id=123359 is a repeatable
crash and should definitely be addressed for 4.1.0 (too late for 4.0.1).

Edwin uses the DEB packages while everybody else here probably tested
with the RPM packages, but if packaging is correct this difference
shouldn't justify the bugs he sees.

Regards,
   Andrea.

Please see the thread on the QA list where things start to look as if
buildbot nightly builds where tested that were not compatible (and not
intended to be compatible) with the system where they were tested.

Most of the issues look platform independent. They seem to be reported
against Linux64 just because this was the system the testers used and
not because they were isolated to be Linux64 specific. So it would be
interesting for testers on other platforms to check them too. I suggest
that if an issue is confirmed on two or more different platforms that
this field gets set to "ALL".

I have finished my investigation. The below given buglist shows now 8
issues. 5 out of 8 are still not confirmed. From the remaining three one
is a problem in the build environment, another one is a known conflict
with an installed LibreOffice instance and the third one is a problem
with an extension.
Details on the issues I had investigated since my intermediate report are:
- 122738 - platform-independent; occurs at least since OOo 3.3.0
- 122741 - platform-independent; occurs at least since OOo 3.2.0
- 122742 - platform-independent; occurs at least since OOo 3.3.0
- 122743 - not reproducible; resolved as NOTABUG by reporter in the
meanwhile
- 123350 - platform-independent; regression introduced in AOO 4.0.0
- 123351 - platform-independent; occurs at least since OOo 3.2.0
- 123353 - platform-independent; occurs at least since OOo 3.2.0
- 123354 - platform-independent; occurs at least since OOo 3.2.0
- 123355 - platform-independent; occurs at least since OOo 3.2.0
- 123357 - platform-independent; resolved as NOTABUG
- 123359 - platform-independent; regression introduced in AOO 4.0.0
- 123360 - platform-independent; occurs at least since OOo 3.2.0
- 123362 - platform-independent; occurs at least since OOo 3.2.0
- 123363 - platform-independent; occurs at least since OOo 3.2.0

Thus, I do not draw the conclusion that AOO is unusable on Linux 64bit.

Best regards, Oliver.

So this initial assessments shows that there is no Linux64 specific
badness, it just proves the assumption that the platform field was set
to "Linux64" not because the issues were analyzed to be Linux64
specific. They were just reported for that popular platform because it
has many power users of Apache OpenOffice.

And it shows that an issue's Operating-System field is somewhat
ambiguous. For the reporter the field means the operating system where
the problem occurs. As was seen in the original mail of this thread it
can also get interpreted differently: to evaluate the quality of AOO's
support for a platform. This would only work if the field was more reliable.

To make it more reliable I suggest that the field gets adjusted when the
issue gets confirmed or when the platform impact of a problem is better
known. E.g. when users report the issue on different platforms or when
the issue has been analyzed and the root cause is understood to be
platform independent.

Herbert

My intermediate report.
I had a look at about half of the initial 28 reported issues. Due to my
investigations the below given buglist now only shows 22 issues.
- 121322 - not my area of expertise - no investigations from my side
- 121694 - platform-independent and most likely not a bug
- 122278 - duplicate of 122279 which is platform-independent
- 122281 - platform-independent, broken since OOo 3.4Beta
- 122333 - still unclear and unconfirmed
- 122480 - until now not reproducible - it is still unconfirmed
- 122715 - still unconfirmed and reporter's feedback pending
- 122726 - still under investigation by others --> no investigation from
my side
- 123348 - already known and depending other software installed on the
system; also reporter answers pending
- 121290 - related to build environment - users are not affected;
workaround available
- 121312 - not my area of expertise - no investigations from my side
- 122014 - seems to be fixed in AOO 4.0.1
- 122737 - platform-independent

Best regards, Oliver.

I will have a closer look at these issues in my Ubuntu 64bit 10.04 VM.
On this VM I have snapshots with different OpenOffice versions - namely
OOo 3.3.0, AOO 3.4.0 and AOO401RC2. Thus, I can check, if the defects
are newly introduced or already present in a former version.

I will also check on my Windows 7 64bit, if the defects are also
reproducible on this platform.

Well, I'm using AOO on a 64 bit Linux system every day without problems ;)
One of the problems on the list was a duplicate of another problem solved
on 4.0.0, some I cannot reproduce (I commented on one of them) and on
several I have no idea about the problem they describe, because they refers
to a particular "test case". I only have looked at reports against Writer,
though.

Ricardo
