Contact message (from OpenBob)

Does openOffice run on windows 8.0 also? I did not find e.g. a "systems requirements" and found nothing that identified which windows incarnations it will run on.
Thanks!

yes, tests have been succesful under these platform, althought some issues
have been dealt with silent installations.

The previous versions were before Windows 8 was released. New versions
should include Windows 8 as supported platform.

my concern solely the time wasted, time better spent on other issues.

and if you have seen this issue occur several times before, so much more
reason a pre-warning would have been more helpfull than a shoot-down
afterward.

it does not contain a mail form or other contact information except:
For administrative help contact the
Administrators<http://wiki.openoffice.org/wiki/AOOW:Administrators>.

which leads to a page, where the users get stucked (and as far as I can see
it is not translated)

that of course could be changed and translated to all the languages we
support.

I'm not shooting the messenger. I'm simply relaying an perspective
from someone who has been involved in this project long enough to have
seen this kind of issue occur several times before. Try not to take it
personally whenever someone has a concern with an area that you have
touched.

I'm concerned with the results, not the BZ issue. The misdirected
issues are only showing up now.

I think you are overreacting. The contact form is wonderful. The
problem is it is too attractive to users seeking something else
(product support) and because there are far more users seeking product
help than seeking admin help, this contact form is likely to be a
problem. But we don't need to decide now. We can monitor it further.

I can modify the footer and add the text you suggest. That requires I
modify the skin, which is AOO anyhow. I am not sure if the footer can be
translated, I have to test that.

and then remove the contact form ?

if we agree on this, I would apriciate a BZ so I dont forget it.

The problem is not you, but users misusing it. We couldn't imagine this
in advance.

Do we have more flexibility in the footer? Maybe it is possible to
replace the contact form with a footer text like:

For support requests and problems with OpenOffice use the official
forum: http://forum.openoffice.org. For problems with this wiki site
(not with the OpenOffice program), e-mail dev@openoffice.apache.org and
insert [MWIKI] in the subject of your e-mail.

This would still serve the purpose, even though e-mails will almost
always have to be moderated.

Regards,
   Andrea.

I dont understand why you disagree so strongly now , and did not even
comment the BZ issue, it was announced on this list and I did wait 72 hours
before implement it.

For sure it can be taken off again, just make a BZ and it will be handled
in due time, no problem.

Of course next time someone makes a BZ, announces it, and it remains
uncommented, I will still hesitate to implement it, since it is obvious
that 72 hours is not enough to guarantee that my time isnt wasted. The
next higher level is a vote which I honestly find a bit over the head.

We could maybe try putting a disclaimer on the form at

I searched for other contact forms, that was more flexible and only aimed
at login (as pr BZ), but found none, unless I wanted to modify the mwiki
code, which I dont want to do.

I have 3 options:
1) keep it as it is
2) keep the frame and text as it is, but only before login
3) remove it again.

I cannot change the word "help" unless someone comes with another word that
is in the translated messages (pls remember a lot of users use the site in
their own language).

We could maybe try putting a disclaimer on the form at
http://wiki.openoffice.org/wiki/Special:Contact
like the one we have in the Bugzilla footer. Or, better, with a link to
the forum for user support. Something like (feel free to fix the language):

This contact form is for technical problems with this wiki site, not for
OpenOffice problems. Please use http://forum.openoffice.org/ for support
requests concerning the OpenOffice program.

But if the number of people miss-using this contact page far exceeds
those correctly using it then we'll need to reconsider.

This is something that we've had to watch out for from the start of
the project. With the extremely large number of users we have, even
if 0.01% of them misuse a contact form, it will cause us problem. So
we need to be very careful. Having a prominent link that says "Help"
on the wiki is very attractive to a user looking for help, even if it
is totally unrelated to an admin question.

In fact, that's all we've seen so far, right? People using the form
for support requests rather than for login questions. And remember,
the one case you had of a login question, he was able to find help
eventually.

we get it because I solved a BZ requesting a contact page, where e.g.
people with login problems could write. I used ml dev as target because we
dont have other lists where eg login problems will be seen and handled.

Of course some people use it for other purposes, which we (or the
moderators) have to refer to else where. the contact page cannot check the
content.

Why are we getting support questions to the dev list via the wiki?
This is not good. Shouldn't they be directed to the users list or the
forums?

(Also, our System Requirements page, linked to from the download page,
