The error is in my use of the phrase 'binary backwards compatible' - I meant that the API has not changed so you should be able to drop it in place without a recompile. Not that you could serialize objects between 2.1 and 2.2.
We have applied serialVersionIDs in 2.2; so between 2.2 and 2.3 serialization should work.
