One of the worst offenders is the test suite. I experimented a bit with mock [recomendations|https://github.com/google/googletest/blob/master/googlemock/docs/CookBook.md#making-the-compilation-faster] but did not measure any improvement.

I'd be happy to take a crack at improving this provided there was a shepherd.
